Radio Northumberland announce Blyth Spartans deal

Blyth Spartans and Radio Northumberland have agreed a deal for the local community station to broadcast all of the club's home fixtures during the 2013/14 season.

This will include fixtures in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League and all four cup competitions Spartans take part in.  Additionally the station has also committed to covering a minimum of five away fixtures throughout the season.

The station have covered several Spartans fixtures this season and have received excellent feedback from the Green Army and opposition supporters.  Radio Northumberland's Head of Sport Jonny Hall will be joined in the Croft Park commentary box by Spartans Senior Press Officer Mark Carruthers for the coverage.

Jonny Hall said "This latest announcement is part of Radio Northumberland’s on-going commitment to providing high quality, non-league football programming in this area. Everyone at the club has been very welcoming and I have personally enjoyed my first season at Croft Park working with Mark, Phil and the rest of the Spartans media team.

"The response to our coverage, from both the Green Army and opposition supporters, has been incredible and we look forward to providing live and uninterrupted coverage of all home games next season at one of the most famous non-league clubs in the country.”

Blyth Spartans Head of Media Phil Castiaux commented ""Having Radio Northumberland pledging to extend their coverage of our games next season is great news. Anyone who has listened to their broadcasts this year will agree that the station do themselves proud in terms of their polished commentary.

"The move to increase broadcasts can be seen as another welcome improvement in Blyth Spartans' media output,"

More news regarding the away fixtures the station will be covering will be revealed in due course.

Radio Northumberland BOOMS out foghorn message

Community radio station Radio Northumberland’s latest community message is set to boom out across the North Sea.

Renowned international artist Lise Autogena from Denmark visited the Bedlington based radio station to talk about her new art project, “The Foghorn Requiem.”

On June 22nd as part of the Festival of the North East, Souter Lighthouse in Whitburn will be the venue for a very unusual piece of music.

Lise, originally from Denmark and fellow artist Joshua Portway have collaborated with composer Orlando Gough to create The Foghorn Requiem. The piece has been written to mark the demise of the foghorn, which, due to modern safety enhancements at sea are being phased out.

As well as the foghorn at Souter Lighthouse, a variety of vessels will take part in the requiem together with three brass bands on the shore.

Also taking part will be the Northumbria Unit of nautical charity, The Maritime Volunteer Service.

Head of Unit, Nigel Campbell was delighted to offer help to the project.

“We have a rigid inflatable boat that we can use to help the project in whatever way is needed on the day. Anyone who want to know more about our voluntary work in the north east can contact me on 07717 715500.”

Radio Northumberland has been providing 24 hour Internet programming since it formed in January 2012. It has gained a reputation for community involvement as well as broadcasting music and talk based programming. Now, an application has been made to Ofcom for a licence that will enable them to broadcast on an FM radio frequency to the people of Ashington, Bedlington, Blyth, Cramlington and Morpeth.

The station broadcasts a variety of music styles and genres with shows by experienced presenters and interviewers as well as running shows produced and presented by local schools and other community organisations.

The interview with Lise can be heard online at http://www.radionorthumberland.com during the station’s community features between 10am and noon, Monday to Friday.
